The romantic Hanging Gardens of Marqueyssac
Starting point of any visit to the Perigord, the Marqueyssac Gardens are romantic and picturesque. Located around a castle from the beginning of the 19th century, discover more than 6 km of shaded walks.
The 22 ha park, built on a rocky spur, dominates the valley from its high cliffs, offering you a breathtaking view! At only 130 meters above the river, you can observe the most beautiful panorama of the Périgord. Witness a rich historical past and an exceptional natural heritage. This grandiose viewpoint embraces the whole valley and its castles: Beynac, Fayrac, Castelnaud, la Roque-Gageac…
The architecture
Discover the Château de Marqueyssac, dating from the end of the 18th century. The house is composed of two distinct sides. Facing the valley, the castle reveals a large façade, composed of a central tower, which contains the staircase. At the back, we discover a much more intimate layout, open to the park. Built in all simplicity, the castle has a roof in lauze, typical material of the region.
Vegetation
Set in a network of boxwoods, the whole domain offers you a wild and romantic nature. During your walk, you will meet ornamental species: lime tree, Judas tree, cytise, plane tree and elm. From August to September, you can also admire the cyclamen of Naples, which produces fabulous colorful carpets.
