Josephine Baker’s home

The Château des Milandes is also known and recognized for having been the home of the interplanetary star of the Roaring Twenties: Josephine Baker. Indeed, at the beginning of the Second World War, Josephine Baker joined the Red Cross and made the Château des Milandes an important site for the French resistance. The castle will become the place of refuge for many maquis and maquisards. It was during this period that Josephine Baker, among other things, passed secret messages hidden in sheet music until France was completely free.
