Château des Milandes is also famous for having been the home of the interplanetary star of the Roaring Twenties: Josephine Baker. Indeed, from the very start of the Second World War, Josephine Baker joined the Red Cross and turned the Château des Milandes into a hotbed of the French Resistance. The castle will become the place of refuge for many maquis and maquisards. It was during this period that Josephine Baker, among other things, passed secret messages hidden in sheet music until France was completely free.
