When staying at Camping La Bouysse, your gaze is immediately drawn to the sheer limestone cliffs that line the river. As you navigate the meandering waters of the Périgord Noir, particularly near the famous Rocher de Caudon, one detail often intrigues attentive observers: small square openings, carved with surgical precision, seem to be watching us from above.

These are not the whims of nature, but the remnants of an ancient telecommunications system. A journey into the history of the “Valley of the Watchers.”

A region shaped by river trade

For centuries, the Dordogne was not the recreational destination we know today. It was a major trade route, vital to the economy of southwestern France. The gabarres—flat-bottomed boats—would travel downstream loaded with salt, dried fish, wood for cooperage, or Bergerac wine.

But navigating the Dordogne, with its “S”-shaped bends and sometimes treacherous currents, was a risky undertaking. Beyond natural dangers, the value of the cargo attracted those with ulterior motives: bandits, enemy troops in times of war, or rival lords seeking to levy arbitrary taxes. It was to protect this vital trade route that the landscape was transformed.

The “Windows” of Rocher de Caudon: The First 5G Network in History

Those square holes you can see in the rock are actually old lookout posts. Why this shape and this location? The answer lies in the unique geography of our valley.

1. A panoramic view of the meandering river

The Dordogne winds its way through the landscape. For a person standing at water level, it is impossible to know what lies beyond the next bend. By stationing lookouts in these artificial niches carved into the cliff, one could enjoy an unobstructed view stretching for several kilometers. These “windows” made it possible to anticipate the arrival of any ship or armed force long before they became visible from the banks.

2. The Light Signal: An Alert at the Speed of Light

This is where the ingenuity of our ancestors really comes into its own. These lookout posts weren’t just for watching; they were used for communication. As soon as a threat was spotted downstream (down the river), the lookout would light a signal fire at the entrance to his watchtower.

Smoke by day, or flames by night, were immediately spotted by the next lookout post, located a few kilometers further upstream (up the river). From post to post, the alert traveled up the valley in record time, allowing the surrounding villages, ports, and castles to prepare for defense.

While you can catch a glimpse of these openings from the hiking trails, it’s really from the river that you can fully appreciate this historic site. Setting out from our Canoës Azur base, located right at Camping La Bouysse, you’ll find yourself in the heart of this defensive system.

As you walk to the foot of the Rocher de Caudon, look up. You’ll realize just how much effort it must have taken to carve these niches directly into the sheer cliff face. Today, these windows no longer serve to warn of wars, but they provide valuable refuges for local biodiversity, such as the peregrine falcon and the jackdaw.

On July 11, the Tour de France will pass through the medieval town of Sarlat-La-Canéda!

Stage 8, from Périgueux to Bergerac, promises a complete immersion in the iconic landscapes of the Périgord Noir. The peloton will wind its way through places rich in history and natural beauty:

• The Vézère Valley, a UNESCO World Heritage Site
• Montignac-Lascaux, a symbol of prehistory
• Les Eyzies, a global leader in prehistoric archaeology
• Sarlat-la-Canéda, a medieval gem in the heart of the Dordogne
• After winding through the narrow streets of Sarlat, the race will continue toward the hills of Domme, before following the Dordogne Valley, offering spectacular views of La Roque-Gageac and Beynac.

September is another great time to enjoy the Périgord Noir: the days are mild, the light is magnificent, and there’s no shortage of things to do.

In Sarlat, the Saturday morning market remains a must-see, and on September 20 and 21, it’s time for Heritage Days, when you can (re)discover castles, villages, and historic sites.
